Canada Overtime Calculator

Estimate Canadian overtime pay with federal baseline assumptions, province or territory context, daily and weekly hours, and optional time off in lieu notes.

Estimate Canadian overtime pay

Enter an hourly rate and overtime assumptions. This is a federal baseline scenario tool, not a full provincial-law calculator.

How the Canada overtime calculator works

The Canada overtime calculator provides a cautious federal-baseline estimate from hourly rate, daily overtime assumptions, and weekly overtime assumptions. It includes a province or territory context selector because Canadian employment standards are divided between federal and provincial or territorial systems.

This page is not a full provincial-law calculator. A federally regulated workplace may use federal labor standards, while many other workers fall under provincial or territorial employment standards. Use the tool to model arithmetic, then verify which jurisdiction applies.

Canada overtime estimate formula

The calculator keeps daily and weekly assumptions separate because some Canadian rules can involve more than one threshold concept. The result does not automatically choose the greater value or resolve overlap unless the user has already identified the correct method.

Canada.ca federal sources and IPG-002 should be reviewed for federally regulated workplaces. Provincial or territorial sources should be reviewed for workers outside the federal system.

dailyOvertimeEstimate = dailyOvertimeHours x hourlyRate x dailyMultiplier
weeklyOvertimeEstimate = weeklyOvertimeHours x hourlyRate x weeklyMultiplier
totalOvertimeEstimate = dailyOvertimeEstimate + weeklyOvertimeEstimate
timeOffEquivalent = monetary estimate converted only if the applicable rule permits it

Canada federal baseline example

Suppose an hourly rate is CA$28 and the user enters 6 weekly overtime hours at 1.5x. The tool estimates CA$252 in weekly overtime pay. If daily overtime is also entered, it is shown separately so the user can review possible overlap before relying on the total.

If time off in lieu is being considered, use the checkbox only as a reminder. The calculator does not determine whether time off in lieu is permitted or how it must be documented.

Example: CA$28 x 6 x 1.5 = CA$252 estimated weekly overtime.

Federal and provincial caution

Canada's federal labor standards apply to federally regulated workplaces, not every Canadian employee. Provinces and territories have their own employment standards, exemptions, averaging rules, overtime thresholds, and special industry rules.

The province or territory selector does not change the formula on this page. It exists to keep the jurisdiction question visible and to avoid implying that one federal estimate applies across all Canadian jobs.

What this Canada calculator does not decide

This page does not determine jurisdiction, exemption status, averaging agreements, banked time, public holiday pay, vacation pay, tax withholding, CPP, EI, or provincial payroll deductions. It also does not provide a complete government-of-Canada overtime rates tool.

Use the result as a transparent estimate, then verify with Canada.ca or the applicable provincial or territorial labor authority.

International overtime calculators

Use these country and region pages to compare local overtime assumptions without treating one jurisdiction as a universal rule. Each page links to official labor sources and keeps the calculator inputs editable because contracts, worker categories, industry rules, and public-sector rules may change the result.
