Australia Overtime Calculator

Estimate Australian overtime and penalty pay from hourly rate, first-tier overtime, second-tier overtime, weekend assumptions, and public holiday assumptions.

Estimate Australian overtime pay

Enter an hourly rate and editable award-style multipliers. This is a scenario tool, not a universal award calculator.

How the Australia overtime calculator works

The Australia overtime calculator uses an hourly rate and editable award-style multipliers for first-tier overtime, second-tier overtime, weekend work, Sunday work, and public holiday work. This reflects the way Australian overtime questions often depend on a specific modern award or registered agreement rather than one national overtime multiplier.

Use the hourly rate field for the rate you intend to test. For a casual worker, that may mean entering a rate that already includes casual loading if the award or agreement treats it that way. The calculator does not decide the applicable award, classification, or loading.

Australia overtime estimate formula

The formula is deliberately flexible because Australian overtime and penalty rates are usually tied to the award, agreement, classification, employment type, and roster pattern. A payroll-ready result requires the correct source document first.

Fair Work Ombudsman guidance should be used to identify the relevant rules before relying on this page for anything more than a planning estimate.

firstTierEstimate = firstTierHours x hourlyRate x firstTierMultiplier
secondTierEstimate = secondTierHours x hourlyRate x secondTierMultiplier
weekendOrSundayEstimate = enteredHours x hourlyRate x selectedMultiplier
publicHolidayEstimate = publicHolidayHours x hourlyRate x holidayMultiplier
totalGrossEstimate = all categories added together

Australia award-style example

Suppose the hourly rate is AU$32, first-tier overtime is 2 hours at 1.5x, and second-tier overtime is 3 hours at 2x. The tool estimates AU$96 for first-tier overtime and AU$192 for second-tier overtime, for AU$288 before any weekend or public holiday assumptions.

If an award uses a different split, change the hours and multipliers. If Sunday or public holiday work is covered by a separate penalty, enter those hours separately instead of combining them with ordinary overtime.

Example: AU$32 x 2 x 1.5 = AU$96. AU$32 x 3 x 2 = AU$192. Estimated tiered overtime = AU$288.

Award and agreement caution

Australia does not use one universal overtime rule for every worker. Awards and registered agreements may define when overtime starts, how casuals are treated, whether penalty rates apply, and whether public holiday work is paid differently. That is why this page avoids hard-coding a single national rule.

If you are unsure of the applicable award, use Fair Work resources or the employer's agreement before choosing multipliers. The result is only as accurate as the rule assumptions entered.

What this Australia calculator does not decide

This page does not determine award coverage, classification, casual loading, penalty stacking, minimum engagement, breaks, allowances, tax withholding, superannuation, or exact payroll obligations. It also does not replace the Fair Work Pay and Conditions Tool or award-specific advice.

Use the result to compare scenarios after the correct rule source is known. For payroll decisions, confirm the award, agreement, roster, and classification.

International overtime calculators

Use these country and region pages to compare local overtime assumptions without treating one jurisdiction as a universal rule. Each page links to official labor sources and keeps the calculator inputs editable because contracts, worker categories, industry rules, and public-sector rules may change the result.
